Overview
We are looking for a competent GIS user, with an interest in commercial maritime activities, to join our Navigation team.
The primary focus of the role will be to update and expand our range of navigational atlases used by merchant shipping. The Witherbys range of Passage Planning Guides is used to provide guidance on the safety of navigation in the world’s most challenging navigational areas, including the Panama Canal, the Great Barrier Reef, the Straits of Malacca and Singapore plus other critical regions.
The GIS Technician will ensure our maritime information products are produced with accuracy, efficiency and are maintained properly. The GIS Technician will perform data capture, cartography, routine data management tasks, create custom base maps and manage data.
The candidate will have good attention to detail and take personal responsibility for the accuracy of products. The candidate will have the attitude and skills required to help us develop and improve our working practices and ensure the timely and efficient supply of information to customers who operate in a high-risk environment.
GIS Technician Responsibilities
* Produce and update cartographic products and navigational diagrams
* Create and maintain geospatial datasets and databases
* Create custom Basemaps and symbology as required
* Digitise nautical information from background raster maps, called ENCs (Electronic Navigational Charts), which are licensed from Hydrographic Offices (S-57, S-100)
* Translate and/or import GIS-compatible data maintaining the integrity of the original source
* Maintain the Maritime Chart Service component of Esri ArcGIS Enterprise
* Manage the official IHO S-63 & S-57 ENC update schedules within the Maritime Chart Service
* Create Web Map Services for use in ArcGIS Desktop and Witherbys ArcGIS Portal
* Follow and improve workflow processes and maintain project-related documentation
* Provide advice and support to other projects as required and occasionally send corrections to Hydrographic Offices
* Procurement and ordering as required
GIS Technician Desirable Skills and Knowledge
Familiarity with, or interest in, the following:
* A passion for anything maritime or nautical
* Competent Esri ArcGIS Pro user
* Experience with ArcGIS Enterprise and Portal for ArcGIS
* Experience with scripting and process automation (Python or ModelBuilder)
* Adobe Illustrator
* Web maps
* Navigational knowledge (IALA Maritime Buoyage, IMO routeing measures and Traffic Separation Schemes)
* Admiralty Digital List of Lights, and Admiralty Digital List of Radio Signals
* Familiarity with ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems)
* Interest in developing new products and improving existing products
GIS Technician Competence
* To have at least 2 years’ GIS experience
* Strong attention to detail
* The ability to work effectively in a team
* To be able to communicate at all levels and in a knowledge‐led manner
* To be dynamic and energetic in your approach
* Be capable of working to tight deadlines
* Be able to communicate clearly regarding the projected completion of projects
Salary and Conditions
* • Salary £25-28,000, depending on experience
• Normal place of work is Livingston
• As Covid-19 travel restrictions are eased, there may be opportunities for foreign travel
